Allergy is now considered to be the 'number one environmental disease' affecting 1 in 3 people in the UK. It can affect several organ systems including the skin, lungs, nose and gut and can result in anaphylaxis which is occasionally fatal. This online degree level module will teach you how to recognise allergy in each organ system and design management strategies that will improve patients’ lives significantly.

This module covers the following areas:

  • Allergy and allergens – common triggers and cross-reactivities
  • Mechanisms of allergy – how it all works
  • Allergy diagnosis (including a practical session on skin prick testing)
  • Anaphylaxis - early recognition, treatment and long term care
  • Allergic rhinitis
  • Allergic asthma
  • Allergic skin diseases
  • Food allergy
  • Setting up an allergy clinic

By the end of the module, you will be able to:

  • Understand the importance of allergy as a multi-organ disease
  • Understand the treatment implications for allergy in multiple organ systems
  • Develop an evidence-based approach to the diagnosis and management of symptomatic patients
  • Recommend and justify appropriate treatment options
  • Understand the allergic response as it relates to symptoms and their management

This module will take 6 months to complete and is delivered through interactive online learning supported by 2 study days and 1 assessment day.

Assessment is a 2 hour unseen written exam and 3000 word assignment.
